kennington noir presents raw deal (1948)
£10 & under, activitiesThe third choice in our series of lesser-seen film noir gems is the great Raw Deal: sinister and violent; dark and sensual, this was the second collaboration between director Anthony Mann and cinematographer John Alton, a Hungarian émigré who shot many wonderfully atmospheric features in the 1940s and 1950s and whose book “Painting With Light” remains a classic cinematography lighting reference. Add to that a strong cast and an unusual female voiceover, and we have tonight a treat for fans of classic noir. The feature will be introduced by Kulraj Phullar who is currently completing his PhD on “Good Girls and Goodness in Classic Hollywood Film Noir” at King's College London. The first half of the programme will comprise a selection of short cinematic treats from 1948, courtesy The Dave Locke Archive. Doors open at 18.30, for a 19.30 start. Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
